Student bravery acknowledged by Mayor of Wirral
11 July 2016
Sophie (Year 7) had been part of a first aid session in school delivered by St John Ambulance just days before her skills had to be put into action in a real life situation.
While walking to school Alex (Year 10) and another student, they saw a woman collapse and hit her head. She appeared to be fitting and they rushed over along with another member of the public.
Their quick thinking and calm response impressed Wirral Mayor, Councillor Pat Hackett, who met with the two of them at the Town Hall to personally recognise their actions.
He said: “I was so impressed to hear what the girls did and how brave they were. Their quick response undoubtedly made a big difference to the woman and I wanted to personally acknowledge their kindness. This incident highlights the importance of first aid skills and I think it is great the school gave the children the opportunity to lean vital skills that can ultimately save lives. ”
While Alex called an Ambulance, Sophie instructed the others to turn the woman over to make sure she didn’t choke. Sophie then started to talk to the woman to reassure her and keep her calm while they waited for the emergency services to arrive.
Headteacher Helen Johnson said: “We are so very proud of the quick thinking and calm response the students showed in a real life emergency situation. Although Sophie had first aid knowledge being a cadet for St John Ambulance, she said the session she had in school just days before was certainly fresh in her mind when the incident happened. I am so glad their compassion and kindness has now been recognised beyond school by the Mayor who has seen what wonderful ambassadors for the school the students are. “
Sophie and Alex were shown around the Town Hall and Committee Rooms by the Mayor as well as the Mayor’s Chambers during their visit.
