Students visit one of Wirral’s leading employers for a ‘Behind the Scenes’ inspiration tour organised by Wirral Young Chamber of Commerce.
15 March 2017
Unilever are suppliers of more than 400 brands in the marketplace currently and as such offer a range of fantastic career pathways including internships, apprenticeships, graduate opportunities and jobs to progress in. They also have a range of sectors to suit individual interests including Engineering, Manufacturing and Business Development.
The day involved a tour of the Engineering plant where students were shown demonstrations and had the chance to talk to current apprentices and ask questions. They then visited the IT Department were the CEO came to speak to students and talked to them about his journey within the company. Finally, students visited the production line and watched how they make the bottles and again had the opportunity to speak to current graduates about their career journeys and how the company supports their own individual progression.
“It was amazing. I was so impressed by how well Unilever look after their employees and it was brilliant to see all the different things that go on which you don’t realise happen right on our doorstep” Michael – Year 11 Student
The main purpose of the visit was so that students could recognise how a large company can offer different career progression opportunities and to hear from current apprentices and graduates so they could reflect on different progression avenues. It also gave them an insight into different roles within a company and how they all offer different skill sets and opportunity.
Assistant Head of Year 11 Mr Huyton said “Unilever is the 4th largest company in the world and this was a fantastic opportunity for students to see how a local company can build itself up to be a successful global business. It also allowed them to recognise that a company such as this is on their doorstep and can offer a fantastic range of careers and progression to suit everyone’s interests”
It was good for these students to speak to people who have gone through different avenues to progress their individual careers and to see the different sectors that make up a successful business such as Unilever.
The trip was organised by The Young Chamber of Commerce, whom the school are proud to be a member of. Connecting students with local businesses and giving opportunities to learn about the exciting world of work.
