Eco-school students learn about climate, live from polar researchers in Antarctica

It was a very special, memorable afternoon for a selection of our students, as they had the chance to question researchers aboard the polar research vessel, the RRS Sir David Attenborough - live from Antarctica.

The students from The Birkenhead Park School, which is part of the Eco Schools programme, posed a range of questions to the three researchers, Sophie Fielding, Emily Newton and Flo Atherden, who are part of the British Antarctic Survey team currently stationed in the Antarctic.

The event, hosted at the Eureka! museum in Seacombe, a hub for scientific learning and exploration, provided the perfect setting for this interactive experience. Organised by Wirral Council, the visit helped students better understand the issues global warming have on our planet, and how this will affect their future.

It started with being given a ‘virtual tour’ of the ship from one of the ships designers and construction engineers, John Drummond from Wirral shipbuilders, Cammell Laird.

They then connected live via Zoom to the researchers and around 20 different students got the chance to ask questions about the work they are doing, the environment they work in and much more. Research is currently being done on the giant iceberg that has broken free, and what this means for rising sea levels. Students learnt how important it was to live more sustainably in their day to day lives.

Year 7 student Jess was also interviewed by ITV news, which was broadcast later that night on national television.  All of the students had a fantastic time and agreed it was a once in a lifetime opportunity to see first hand the conservation work being done on the ship that they all saw being built in the boatyard locally.
