25 years of World Book Day celebrated at The Birkenhead Park School
3 March 2022
The Birkenhead Park School are celebrating all things Literary this month, and are starting with World Book Day. The annual celebration of books, authors and illustrators, is one of the highlights of our year at The Birkenhead Park School – we just love reading!
This year marks the 25th anniversary of World Book Day and we’ve chosen an amazing selection of books covering a wide selection of curriculum topics. Strong reading skills and a wide range of vocabulary have been proven to underpin academic success and we have a range of initiatives in place across all year groups and subjects to not only improve a student’s reading ability, but inspire a love of reading.
Our ‘The Big Read’ initiative also won us the runner up prize in the ‘Innovative & Creative Literacy’ category at the prestigious Educate Awards, celebrating excellence in schools in the North West.
Some of the activities going on in the school today include teachers dressing as their favourite book character, students decorating potatoes in the most a-peeling ways, and doors all around the school are being decorated to celebrate book covers and their fantastic illustrations.
Assistant Headteacher, Mrs Dawes said: “Seeing our students holding or reading from one of our newly chosen books fills me with pride. Our teachers have outdone themselves with their costumes this year, and are really excited to show the students the new selection of books. They really want to start those positive conversations about reading”.
Headteacher at the Birkenhead Park School, Mrs Johnson said: “At The Birkenhead Park School, we work tirelessly with our students to instil a love of reading from the moment they walk into the school aged 11. These literary and reading skills will go on with them in life, even after they’ve left us, and will open many doors for them in their future lives”.
