Student successes at The Birkenhead Park School

After only starting at The Birkenhead Park School in Year 11, Syrian born  Abdou Jouma has proven what greatness can be achieved in the face of adversity with 10 fantastic GCSE’s at A* to B.

Abdou and his brother were welcomed to the school in September 2015. After already missing a year of GCSE studies, Abdou has worked tirelessly to accomplish his impressive results that make him one of the schools top performing students.

Abdou’s family life before coming to England is incomprehensible to most of us; he lived in Syria until he was 11 when he and his family fled to Romania due to the war. After they left his family home was destroyed in a bomb attack. In August 2015 they came to England and Abdou and his brother joined The Birkenhead Park School.  

Speaking of his life back then Abdou said: “In 2011 all we wanted was freedom for our country but unfortunately there were people in Syria who wanted to kill my father so we had to leave. I was so happy to finally have peace but it was so hard to leave my relatives as I cannot see them anymore and it is very hard to keep in touch with them.”

Abdou has certainly not let his past impair his future and plans to go onto to study Chemistry, Biology, Maths and Computer Science. He aspires to be a Doctor like his father or a Computer Programmer.

He said: “My time at The Birkenhead Park School has been a great experience, even though I have only been here for a year I have really enjoyed it. I got so much help and support but after just one year I felt I was ready for my exams and I am so happy with my results.”

Northern Athletics Champion Blake Brown has sprinted to success with nine GCSE’s at A* to C including a distinction * in PE.

Blake is the Northern 100m U17 Champion and has just recently retained his title. He also secured bronze at the England National Championships in the U17 Indoor 60m back in February.

Speaking of his time at The Birkenhead Park School, Blake said it was actually a teacher at the school who noticed his talent: “It was while doing PE in school that one of the teachers told me to try out for Wirral Athletics Club and after just three months of training I became the Merseyside champion. The school has been great and I have really enjoyed my time there.”

Blake is going to The Sixth Form College Birkenhead to study Sport, Biology and Spanish.

Head Girl Crina Pricop is celebrating today after achieving an impressive 11 GCSE’s including five A*/A grades.

Crina’s fantastic achievement is even more inspiring given English is not her first language, having been born in Romania and living in Italy for a time before settling in Birkenhead. She is fluent in four languages and is currently teaching herself Mandarin.

Crina is going to The Sixth Form College Birkenhead in September to study A-Levels and after that is looking to go to University to do a Chemical Engineering course or medicine.

She said: “I am so pleased that all my hard work has paid off and I am really looking forward to college. My time at The Birkenhead Park School has been such a unique experience. The school has very high expectations and standards for us but the teachers are very supportive and friendly, making me much more confident. I have been given so many opportunities at the school that my family could never have given me and I will always be very grateful for that.”

Deputy Head Girl Lauren Leyland’s hard work has certainly paid off securing her nine GCSE’s, eight of which are A*/A grades.

She is off to The Sixth Form College Birkenhead to study Chemistry, Biology, Psychology and Fine Art with the aim to go onto a Russell Group university.

Lauren said: “My experience at The Birkenhead Park School was great and I was always pushed to get the best possible grades. The facilities are fantastic and no matter what subject you like you will enjoy your time at BPS and get the best support.”
